It has been described as refracted light of a vague sort, a case of wandering car lights, and simply shrugged off as an unexplained phenomenon. The Army Corps Of Engineers concluded that it was “a mysterious light of unknown origin.” But those who have encountered this hazy glowing orb while prowling Devil’s Promenade road in the dark of night will testify that it is REAL.

It is known as The Spooklight, and sightings date to the 1800s. The amber ball has been said to bounce off of cars and even pass in and out of open windows. The Devil’s Promenade is along E50 Road East of Quapaw, Oklahoma, near the Missouri border. The Kansas line is four miles north.

For the best chance to see it, park with the engine and lights off and simply wait – quietly. Spooklight cannot be touched, chased, or captured. It appears and disappears at will. The fewer the thrill-seekers present, the better the odds of a sighting. Stories of Spooklight’s origin include suggestions that it represents two Indian lovers looking for each other. Another, more ghoulish tale claims it is the ghost of a zinc miner searching for his head. Whatever it is, one thing is certain: bearing witness to the Spooklight is a downright “Spooky” experience.
